Ghusl (ritual bath) is an essential act of worship in Islam. It is required to cleanse oneself from major impurity (Janabah), such as after intercourse, menstruation, or ejaculation. This article explains how to perform Ghusl correctly for both men and women, based on authentic Hadiths and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
“Indeed, Allah loves those who constantly repent and loves those who purify themselves.”
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:222)
There are several occasions when Ghusl becomes mandatory. These include:
Occasion | Ghusl Mandatory? | Evidence |
---|---|---|
After intercourse (even without ejaculation) | Yes | [Sahih Muslim 349] |
After ejaculation (in sleep or awake) | Yes | [Sahih Bukhari 248] |
End of menstruation | Yes (for women) | [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222] |
End of postnatal bleeding | Yes (for women) | [Sahih Muslim 332] |
Before Friday prayer | Sunnah (recommended) | [Sahih Bukhari 877] |
How to Perform Ghusl (Janaba Bath) for Men
- Make Niyyah (Intention) in your heart to purify yourself from Janabah. No need to say it aloud.
- Say “Bismillah” quietly before starting.
- Wash both hands up to the wrists three times.
- Wash the private parts thoroughly, removing any physical impurity (semen, etc.).
- Perform Wudu as you do for prayer (leave the feet if standing in wet place).
- Pour water over the head three times, ensuring water reaches the roots of the hair and scalp.
- Wash the entire body starting from the right side, then the left, ensuring every part is washed — especially under the arms, between toes, and inside the navel.
- Wash feet if not done earlier in Wudu.
The Prophet ﷺ used to begin Ghusl by washing his hands, private parts, and then performing Wudu before bathing.
[Sahih Bukhari 248]
How to Perform Ghusl for Women (Post-Menstruation or Janaba)
- Make Niyyah for purification from menstruation, Janabah, or postnatal bleeding.
- Say “Bismillah”.
- Wash hands three times up to the wrists.
- Wash the private parts thoroughly using the left hand.
- Perform full Wudu. Feet can be washed at the end if needed.
- Wash hair and scalp thoroughly. Water must reach the roots. Women are not required to undo braids unless water cannot reach the scalp.
- Pour water over the head three times.
- Wash the entire body starting from right to left. Pay special attention to hard-to-reach areas.
- Wash the feet (if not already done).
Detailed Tayammum Guide
-
Confirm That Tayammum is Permissible in Your Case
Tayammum is only valid under specific conditions, such as:- There is no water available within reach or after reasonable search.
- Using water would cause harm due to illness, injury, or severe cold.
- Accessing water is risky (e.g., fear of enemies, wild animals, or distance).
Note: Tayammum is a concession from Allah, not a replacement for Wudhu without valid reason. -
Locate a Pure Natural Material
The surface must be something natural and dry. Acceptable surfaces include:- Pure dust or soil
- Dry sand or clean rocks
- Clay or any natural earthy element
Warning! Do not use materials like ash, coal, impure surfaces, or anything man-made such as metal, wood, or plastic. -
Make a Sincere Intention (Niyyah)
Intend in your heart that you are performing Tayammum to purify yourself for an act of worship (like Salah).“Actions are judged by intentions.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1) -
Begin with the Phrase: “Bismillah”
As with Wudhu, begin by saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah). This is a Sunnah. -
Strike Both Hands Once on the Dusty Surface
Gently tap both palms on the clean, dry surface. It should be a light tap — not forceful. Dust or particles may or may not visibly transfer.Tip: You may blow off excess dust if too much clings to your hands. -
Wipe Your Entire Face Once
After tapping, gently wipe your full face with both palms, ensuring the major portion of the face is covered.“Then wipe your faces and your hands with it (Tayammum).”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6) -
Strike Hands Again (Recommended)
It is Sunnah to strike the hands a second time before wiping the arms, though Tayammum is valid with just one strike. -
Wipe Your Hands/Arms Up to the Wrists
- Use your left palm to wipe your right hand from fingertips to wrist (or forearm if preferred).
- Then use your right palm to wipe your left hand in the same way.
Important: Some scholars allow wiping only up to the wrists, others up to the elbows — both opinions are valid. -
You Are Now in a State of Taharah (Purification)
You may now perform acts of worship like Salah, Qur’an recitation, etc.“...Then find no water, perform Tayammum with clean earth...”
(Surah An-Nisa 4:43)
