Tayammum is a beautiful concession given by Allah ﷻ to His servants, allowing them to perform purification even in the absence of water. It is a symbol of Allah’s mercy, making it easier for the believers to maintain spiritual cleanliness and perform acts of worship. The concept of Tayammum is well-rooted in the Qur’an and Sunnah, with specific guidance on what materials it can be performed upon.

Note: Tayammum is only valid when there is no access to water or when using water may cause harm.

"And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands with it."

Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:6)

What is Tayammum and Why is it Important?

Tayammum, linguistically, means "intention" or "aim". In Islamic terminology, it refers to the act of dry ablution using clean earth when water is not available or cannot be used due to valid reasons like illness or hardship.

It is an act of worship and is done in place of Wudu (ablution) or Ghusl (full body ritual washing). The permissibility and manner of Tayammum have been directly instructed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the companions.

Warning! Tayammum cannot be performed if water is available and one has no valid excuse for avoiding it.

What Surfaces Can Be Used for Tayammum?

The primary condition is that the material used for Tayammum must be pure and natural from the earth. This includes materials that carry dust or earth particles.

Material Permissibility Evidence/Note
Clean Earth (Soil/Dust) ✅ Allowed Explicitly mentioned in Qur’an and Hadith
Sand ✅ Allowed Natural and dusty, used by Sahaba during journeys
Stone ✅ Allowed Permissible if it carries dust
Clay walls (dusty) ✅ Allowed Considered part of “Sa’eed” (earthy surface)
Unbaked bricks ✅ Allowed If made of natural material and dusty
Wood, leaves, grass ❌ Not allowed Not considered part of the “earth”
Metal, plastic, cloth ❌ Not allowed Artificial, non-dusty, man-made

“The earth has been made for me a place of prostration and a means of purification.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 335, Sahih Muslim 521

Details from the Sunnah

In the authentic Hadith of Ammar ibn Yasir رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ showed him how to do Tayammum properly. Ammar had once performed Tayammum by rolling in the dust, but the Prophet ﷺ corrected him:

“It would have been enough for you to do like this.” – Then the Prophet ﷺ struck the ground with his hands once, then wiped the left hand with the right and the back of the hands and his face.

Sahih al-Bukhari 347, Sahih Muslim 368

Conditions for Valid Tayammum Surface

  • It must be pure and not najis (impure)
  • It must be from the earth soil, rock, sand, etc.
  • It should have visible dust or particles
  • It should not be something that cannot hold dust, like plastic or metal

Can Tayammum Be Done on Painted Walls or Tiles?

Modern surfaces such as painted walls, polished marble, or ceramic tiles generally do not contain dust or earthy particles and hence are not permissible unless there is dust collected on them.

Default: If a painted wall or stone floor has visible dust, Tayammum is permissible over that dust.
  1. Confirm That Tayammum is Permissible in Your Case
Tayammum is only valid under specific conditions, such as:
    • There is no water available within reach or after reasonable search.
    • Using water would cause harm due to illness, injury, or severe cold.
    • Accessing water is risky (e.g., fear of enemies, wild animals, or distance).
Note: Tayammum is a concession from Allah, not a replacement for Wudhu without valid reason.
  2. Locate a Pure Natural Material
The surface must be something natural and dry. Acceptable surfaces include:
    • Pure dust or soil
    • Dry sand or clean rocks
    • Clay or any natural earthy element
Warning! Do not use materials like ash, coal, impure surfaces, or anything man-made such as metal, wood, or plastic.
  3. Make a Sincere Intention (Niyyah)
Intend in your heart that you are performing Tayammum to purify yourself for an act of worship (like Salah).

    “Actions are judged by intentions.”

    (Sahih al-Bukhari 1)
  4. Begin with the Phrase: “Bismillah”
As with Wudhu, begin by saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah). This is a Sunnah.
  5. Strike Both Hands Once on the Dusty Surface
Gently tap both palms on the clean, dry surface. It should be a light tap — not forceful. Dust or particles may or may not visibly transfer.
Tip: You may blow off excess dust if too much clings to your hands.
  6. Wipe Your Entire Face Once
After tapping, gently wipe your full face with both palms, ensuring the major portion of the face is covered.

“Then wipe your faces and your hands with it (Tayammum).”

    (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6)
  7. Strike Hands Again (Recommended)
It is Sunnah to strike the hands a second time before wiping the arms, though Tayammum is valid with just one strike.
  8. Wipe Your Hands/Arms Up to the Wrists
    • Use your left palm to wipe your right hand from fingertips to wrist (or forearm if preferred).
    • Then use your right palm to wipe your left hand in the same way.
Important: Some scholars allow wiping only up to the wrists, others up to the elbows — both opinions are valid.
  9. You Are Now in a State of Taharah (Purification)
You may now perform acts of worship like Salah, Qur’an recitation, etc.

“...Then find no water, perform Tayammum with clean earth...”

    (Surah An-Nisa 4:43)

Common Misconceptions

Many assume Tayammum can be done on any surface when water is not available, but this is incorrect. Tayammum is an act of worship and should be done with care, following the Sunnah exactly.

Another mistake is to touch a clean surface like glass or fabric for Tayammum, which is not valid due to its artificial nature and lack of earth particles.

Tayammum_Guide.pdf 300KiB

Tayammum is a gift from Allah ﷻ and a reminder of His mercy. But like all acts of worship, it must be done correctly. Sticking to the materials allowed by the Qur’an and Hadith ensures that our acts are accepted. When you find yourself without water, or in a state where using water can harm your health, remember the words of Allah and the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, and perform Tayammum with full consciousness of its spiritual significance.

What is Tayammum in Islam?

Tayammum is dry ablution using clean earth or dust when water is not available or its use is harmful. It replaces Wudu or Ghusl.

Which materials are allowed for Tayammum?

Natural materials like soil, sand, dust, rocks, and dusty walls are allowed. Artificial surfaces like metal, plastic, or glass are not allowed.

Can Tayammum be done on clean tiles?

Only if they are dusty. If there is no dust, it is not a valid surface for Tayammum.

Is Tayammum allowed for Ghusl?

Yes, if you require Ghusl but cannot access water, you may do Tayammum as a substitute until water is available.

What is the evidence for Tayammum in the Qur’an?

Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:6) and Surah An-Nisa (4:43) mention Tayammum clearly and outline its procedure.

Can Tayammum be done with intention only?

No. Tayammum must involve physically touching a dusty surface as instructed by the Prophet ﷺ.

Is Tayammum valid indefinitely?

Tayammum remains valid until water becomes available or the reason for Tayammum no longer exists.

Can Tayammum replace every Wudu?

Yes, but only when water is unavailable or harmful. Otherwise, Wudu is obligatory.

Does Tayammum have to be repeated for each Salah?

There is a scholarly difference. Majority allow one Tayammum for multiple prayers unless it becomes invalidated.

What invalidates Tayammum?

Anything that invalidates Wudu, or the availability of water, invalidates Tayammum.
