Islam is often misunderstood in the media and public discourse, leading to widespread misconceptions about its teachings, followers, and values. These misunderstandings not only misrepresent a faith followed by over a billion people worldwide, but also contribute to fear, prejudice, and unnecessary tension among communities.

Note: This article aims to clarify some of the most common misconceptions about Islam with facts from authentic Islamic sources.
Misconception Reality
Islam promotes violence Islam promotes peace; the word “Islam” itself means peace and submission to God.
Muslim women are oppressed Islam granted women rights over 1400 years ago including education, property ownership, and divorce.
All Muslims are Arabs Only about 20% of Muslims are Arab; Islam is a global faith with followers from all ethnicities.
Jihad means holy war Jihad literally means “struggle”; the greatest form is the internal struggle against sin.
Islam is intolerant of other religions Islam teaches respect for all Abrahamic faiths and guarantees rights to non-Muslims in Muslim lands.

While these are just a few, they represent widespread views that need correcting. Let’s now explore each misconception in a little more depth:
